Black History Month Fashion Tribute:Grace Jones

Black History Month Fashion Tribute:Grace Jones

Grace Jones was a triple threat in her heyday – a model, actress and singer.

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, she modeled in New York and Paris during the 70s, and soon after began her singing career.

While she already possessed an eye-catching look, she began working closely with stylist Jean-Paul Goude who helped her develop an extreme androgynous image.

As odd as her look may appear, along with the over-the-top ensembles, it is difficult to deny that Grace Jones is an overall stunning work of art.

She has clearly influenced huge artists of today, from Lady Gaga to Rihanna.

Her performances were like spectacles – check out a few of her outrageous onstage outfits from the late 70s and 80s:

Grace caught the eyes of famed artist Andy Warhol, whom she accompanied many times to Studio 54 while disco was at its peak. She also appeared in his portraits:

Grace played major roles in films such as Boomerang with Eddie Murphy and played a Bond girl like no other in A View to Kill:

Just last year, Grace made a comeback with a new album, Hurricane, and at the age of 60 appeared on the cover of V magazine – looking the epitome of fierce:

“I’ve always been a rebel. I never do things the way they’re supposed to be done. Either I go in the opposite direction or I create a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says.” – Grace Jones
